I was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 23, 1977 and moved to Houston at the age of 1, where I now consider myself a native Houstonian. I attended undergraduate school at Baylor University and received a degree in BS-Education; Health Fitness in 2003. I moved back to Houston and found a job as a Personal Trainer at a nearby Country Club. I took a 2 year break from school then decided to attend graduate school. I have always had a passion in helping people. It all began with the satisfaction gained as a personal trainer in helping people gain confidence in themselves, living healthier lives, and impacting their overall well-being. I believe that experience transcended me in becoming a successful recruiter. Recruiting has allowed me to affect people’s lives in a positive way.
While working, I attended evening classes at Houston Baptist University and graduated with a Master’s in Health Administration-Emphasis in Human Resources in 2003. It was my intention upon graduating to work in Corporate HR for a healthcare facility. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any luck landing a job in that sector, but in hindsight, it was a blessing in disguise. My true calling wasn’t in corporate HR, but in corporate recruiting.
I got my first job as a recruiter in 2005 with a Houston based company called Qualitec and worked in the healthcare accounting industry. I worked there for 6 months, but it didn’t pan out as I had hoped. I was highly advised by my manager at that time to continue recruiting. He was fairly adamant that I should continue in recruitment and had faith that I would succeed given the right environment and opportunity. I was disappointed that it didn’t work out, but I was certain I wasn’t ready to give up either! I enjoyed my time there and learned enough about recruiting that gave me the confidence I needed to keep at it. So, I took that experience I gained and decided to take a leap of faith in starting fresh and new within a different industry.
Fortunately, I was able to land a job at MAGIC Engineering as a team member of a start-up oil and gas division. I closed my first split deal with a co-worker, and that feeling of accomplishment resonated in me. That’s when I knew I was at the start of my career. Unfortunately, after about 10 months of employment, the company underwent some unforeseen circumstances that resulted in a company-wide layoff. The Division Manager, Betsy Elliott, voluntarily left and formed her own start-up company, Walker Elliott.
I was hired on at Walker Elliott in August of 2006 as one of 8 employees. It was definitely a risk at the time, but one that has been well worth it! I’ve well established myself within the upstream oil and gas niche and have had great successes within the company. I’ve ranked as Top 3 biller every year and made Partner in 2011. I can thankfully say I can call Walker Elliott home.
I have always had a passion in helping people. It all began with the satisfaction as a personal trainer in impacting a person’s overall well-being (helping people gain confidence in themselves, live healthier lives). I believe that experience transcended me in becoming a successful recruiter. Recruiting has allowed me to affect people’s livelihood in a positive way. If I am elected a member of the Pinnacle Society, I hope to influence others in the same way.
